I thought this was a great simple quick bread recipe. I followed other reviewers suggestions and used 1 cup of milk and 1 1/2 cups of cheese. I also added a package of italian dressing mix and decreased the salt to about 1/4 teaspoon. I thought it was great. My bread didn't crumble like other reviews had trouble with. The crust was crisp, but the bread was soft and fluffy. I will keep this recipe on hand the next time I was some fresh bread in a hurry.

I made this bread to go with some potato soup, and it was the perfect accompanyment. I took the advise of some other reviewers and increased the amount of cheese to 1 1/2 cups and the milk to 1 cup. I also sprinkled some garlic powder and a touch of cayenne into the batter. 1/4 cup of sugar seemed like a lot for a savory bread so I cut it to 2 tablespoons. Next time I'll cut it to 1 since it was still a little too sweet. After baking for 20 minutes, I sprinkled about another 1/2 cup of cheese on the top of the loaf, then continued baking. We all enjoyed this very much with our soup. Thanks for the recipe!

I made this recipe twice using a parmesan-mozzarella mix instead of Cheddar, and it turned out great! Then, I decided to try a carrot variety by replacing the cheese with 1 cup finely grated carrot, doubling the amount of salt and adding 1 teaspoon spices (cinnamon, nutmeg, whatever you like) and it was AWESOME! A big hit with my family and friends!

This is "good." My daughter in particular liked this bread but it was a little too dense for my tastes. Per other recommendations, I used 1c milk, 1 1/4c sharp cheddar cheese, added 1/2 tsp of garlic powder and added some Italian seasonings (apprx 1 tsp). I also added 1/4c parmesan cheese. It took a little longer to bake - the top started to brown b4 the middle was done so after 30 min, I reduced the oven temp to 375 and baked for an additional 10 minutes. The bread had a great crust while the middle was nice and soft. Although it was good, like I said, just a little too dense for me. If you like cornbread type breads, you'd probally enjoy this recipe. My daughter and boyfriend sure did!

This was ok. I used 1 cup of milk so the bread would be less crumbly. I suggest using sharp shredded cheddar because the mild cheddar wasn't strong enough to add flavor to the bread.

This bread was a hit with both me and my husband. I've had requests to make some and send it to work for his co-workers. A little on the sweet side...you might decrease the amount of sugar by one or two tablespoons.
12/28/2006
Perfect as is. I have a problem with people changing all the ingredients and measurements. Please just rate the recipe as is or make up your own.
04/24/2002
I gave it 5 stars all around. It is a good recipe for what it is, a quick bread. Next time I might double the recipe or use a smaller loaf pan. The bread was kind of short. Still, very good and very fast. Thanks Inari!
10/03/2002
Was easy to assemble but overall, not a stand out recipe. Try adding a little garlic or onion powder to give the bread a less baking soda/powdery taste.
01/30/2002
This recipe crumbled very easily - I wouldn't recommend it for soups. I'm going to add more cheese next time
09/14/2001
This is really good bread. Cut down the sugar to 1/8 cup and used half cheddar and half Monterey Jack. The consistency is similar to cornbread.

This is a great recipe!! Unfortunately I used a loaf pan that should've been donated to the Smithsonian Institute's Antiquities Department a long time ago. And I shouldn't be allowed to bake. The middle came out of the pan separately from the crust so I didn't have any slicing problems:o) Nevertheless, we ate the entire thing straight out of the oven & I'll be getting new bakeware tomorrow! I just love these win-win situations. Thanks:o)

I added bacon bits to his recipie and poured the batter into a muffin tin instead. It makes 12 cheddar cheese and bacon bisquits beauftifully.

This couldn't be easier! My husband loved it with our veggie chili. I used 1 1/2c shredded cheese blend, added two diced serrano chile's and a whole bunch of minced fresh garlic. I followed others advice and used one cup of milk and less sugar. Great fast batter style bread. I usually "do" yeast breads. I just wanted something faster for dinner. This recipe is very forgiving and you could do just about anything to it. Thinking smoked cheese with sun dried tomato would totally rock! It also stayed nice and moist for the next two days. You should really try this. Thanks for sharing this recipe.

I thought it was horrible. It wasn't very cheesy, it wasn't very flavorful, and it half of it got thrown away in my apartment...the only thing I can give to it was that it was easy to make.
09/21/2008
I made this recipe twice this week and both times I modified the recipe. Just like everyone else, I used 1 cup milk and 1 1/2 cup of aged cheddar cheese. I also reduced the sugar amount by half, and i added a teaspoon of garlic powder. The first time I made it, it wasn't the best. In fact, I hardly liked it at all. The crust was great but the inside was dense and way too moist. It wasn't fluffy like bread is supposed to be. The second time, I sifted my dry ingredients. It turned out great! The inside was not too moist but not dry, the texture was wonderful.

A little sweet - but wonderful!
01/24/2011
This is a great starter recipe...I always pretty much follow recipes as stated when I first make them.... this took minutes to prepare...very easy had all ingredients... the only thing I did different really was use whole wheat flour instead of the all purpose flour.... and I added a little more cheese.. next time I will add garlic and even more cheese... I just made it to go with ham and potatoe soup also from this site... I had a piece with just a tad of butter on it... simply delicious right from the oven... u really should try this recipe.. this one is certainly a keeper for me .. to go with all my homemade soups etc.... and recipe has so many possibilites.... thanx for sharing this recipe......
12/22/2002
Added a bit of pesto and more cheese to the mixture and served it with a pasta dinner. It was pretty good. Will make again. :)
04/21/2010
This bread is deeeelicious! Since the person who submitted the recipe mentioned that it was a bit crumbly, I added extra olive oil. Just played it by ear but it may have been about 1/2 cup. It went great with chili, and stay moist and edible for a few days.
04/15/2012
Light & Flakey yum yum i added garlic to mine & jalapeno's yum yum
12/23/2004
I had to make this bread with all the mixed reviews.I used 1 c of milk and garlic powder as suggested by other reviews. This bread is crunchy on the outside and moist on the inside. It is a bit on the sweet side.I would make this again except I would omit the sugar and add more cheese and spices.Great bread to play around with different ingredients.
01/02/2006
I left out the sugar completely. I liked it that way and probably would not have liked it with the sugar. This was a really tasty and moist bread. I'll make it again.
02/09/2007
This was a good quick bread. I took the advice of thequalitycookdotcom and used 1 cup of milk and extra cheese. I also added some garlic powder. This went very well with the Chicken Corn Chowder I made. Thanks!
06/21/2011
This bread is awesome! I used cake flour instead of regular, that way I didnt use the baking powder or salt, 2 tbsp of sugar, 3/4 cup of mozarella and a 1/4 cup of parmesan and 1 cup of milk. I also threw in a 1/4 cup of Italian Shake N Bake to add flavor. 5 minutes before the bread was done I threw on another 1/2 cup of mozarella, and WOW! The bread was not crumbly at all and was so moist, I will definitely be making again!
08/31/2011
Do not add sugar. Also, as suggested, I added garlic, 2 cloves, black pepper, and 1.5 cups cheese. I'm not sure if I would not make this again as it wasn't "delicious"; it was bordderline good/ OK. Maybe the sugar messed up the flavor.
03/21/2006
Great tasting bread! My family loved it. I followed the other users sugesstions and used 1 cup milk, 1/2 tsp salt, added 1/2 tsp garlic powder and only 1 Tbsp sugar. The texture was not crumbly and it was not sweet.
05/03/2011
FANTASTIC. I too followed the recommendations of 1 cup milk and 1/5 cups cheese. I used coconut oil instead of canola, and added several shakes of mrs.dash. This is cheesy, savory, crunchy and soft all at once. I KNOW this will be a family favorite for years to come.
03/25/2010
A good soda bread; I used 2/3 cup Gorgonzola and 1/3 cup cream cheese, cubed, instead of cheddar and it was nice; reduce the salt if doing this, though. I also used the spiced olive oil that cubes of feta are canned in instead of vegetable oil. Yum!
03/31/2011
Good, but definitely tastes like a cornbread. I was hoping for more of a dense white bread. Still good, but probably will look for something else next time.
12/09/2007
Love this bread! It is great, quick and easy. I always approximate the cheese and it turns out great. If you want it a little sweeter just throw in another 1/4 cup of sugar. I change it up depending on what I'm serving it with. We love it! One more thing, I always cook my in my cast iron pan - the crust turns out great.
11/15/2009
I took this out of the oven about 1/2 an hour ago and have been waiting patiently for it to settle, it smells so good!! I followed other reviewers advice and increased milk to 1 cup, decreased sugar to 2 tbs, added 1 tbs garlic powder and 1 tbs onion powder, some chopped green onions, and 2 tbs Italian seasoning (the same one I use in pasta sauce recipes), and sprinkled some cheese on top for the last 10 mins of baking time. I also had to turn the heat way down for the last 10 mins or so, as the outside had a beautiful crust, but the inside was still mushy. Came out beautifully! Savory and cheesy, with a crisp thick crust and soft delicious inside. I agree that it's not the best "bread" recipe ever, but an excellent quick and hearty accompaniment bread. We'll have this with a light chicken salad for dinner tonight. Thanks for the basic recipe, I'm sure you could do all sorts of variations with this recipe, next time I think I'll try parmesean, basil and sundried tomatoes!
04/03/2007
For as simple as this bread recipe was it is one of my favorite recipes now! I always have the ingredients on hand and you can bake it in a snap!
05/19/2010
EXCELLENT. This was very quick and easy. I used 1 1/2 cups sharp cheddar cheese, a full cup milk, and a touch of garlic powder as other reviewers suggested, and it was PERFECT. This is a sweet bread, but we like it just the way it is. I will definitely make this again, perhaps adding some oregano or rosemary for an extra touch. Thanks for posting!
03/13/2004
Reading previous reviews about how crumbly these were, I didn't make mine into a loaf. Instead, I made drop biscuits out of them. The texture was fine this way, but I thought they were way too sweet. It could be a personal preference there, but I would definitaly prefer a savory cheese bread to a sweet one. I'll stick to the Cheddar Bay Biscuits recipe found on this site unless I find another one that's better.
11/13/2007
This bread turned out great, not crumbly at all. I increased the cheese by a 1/2 cup and increased the milk by 1/4 cup. I decreased the sugar to 1 T and added 1 tsp. garlic powder and 1/8 tsp. black pepper (I think I'll use more of that next time). So easy to make and the bread was moist of fluffy; cooked exactly in the time prescribed. I'll be making this again and again!!
09/04/2005
Sounded really great but it tastes like it has too much flour.
03/26/2011
Not good. Family did not like. It had an off taste.
01/30/2013
Oh. My. Goodness. This is delicious! I followed other people's advice because I didn't want a failure out of this: I used 6 oz. finely shredded extra sharp white cheddar cheese and 1 cup of milk ( instead of just 1 cup cheese and 3/4 cup milk). It was so cheesy tasting with a crisp, crunchy outside crust yet tender inside. I could live on this alone!
02/20/2011
I followed suggestions to increase the milk (1% worked fine) to 1 c. and the cheese to 1 1/2. Also added garlic powder and Italian spices. The results were delicious! No problem with crumbling, it was actually pretty moist. Definitely a keeper!
02/23/2005
Pretty good for a quick and easy bread. My husband and kids liked it as well. To prevent crumbling, cut the bread in thick slices while it is still hot. Leftovers are good toasted.
02/25/2006
its a bit too sweet for my taste, but still pretty good.
05/10/2011
the taste was good!a little heavy for my taste probably wont make again
07/02/2003
This bread was good. My husband loved it. I added in 1/4 t. garlic salt in place of the salt and suggested garlic powder. I also did not have any milk and so I used 1/2 and 1/2 and the bread did not crumble like others have posted. From now on I will use 1/2 & 1/2. Thank you for a quick and easy bread recipe!
02/08/2011
I used two cups of cheese and 1 cup of milk as well as some seasoning including garlic powder and oregano. I also covered the bread with cheese with about 10 minutes to bake. It worked well since I was serving it immediately. The bread came out very moist and not like cornbread which I was trying to avoid.
02/05/2007
We thought this was great, considering the amount of time it takes! I upped the cheese to a cup and a half and then listened to others and added 1/4C more milk as I thought the dough looked like it needed the help. It accompanied our roast beef dinner perfectly and will be made again for sure. Thanks.
03/22/2007
This was awesome! I did the following -increased cheese to 1 1/2 cups, increased milk to 1 cup, omitted the sugar and added a can of diced green chiles. It was really moist and delicious. Made it for my husband, sis-in-law and father-in-law and they all loved it. This one is a keeper.
09/16/2006
This bread is very tasty! I followed the recipe exactly except I increased the milk to 1 cup as others suggested and used a combination of mexican & mozzarella cheese. It has a very nice flavor (not too sweet) and texture and didn't crumble at all. Next time, I might try an 8x5 pan because the loaf didn't rise very much and my baking powder was fresh.
11/19/2010
This bread has a nice crunch on the outside and is crumbly on the inside. I made it using mild cheddar which didn't give it much flavor- it tasted more like a sweet bread (because of the sugar), so next time I will use a stronger flavored cheese, like sharp cheddar. All-in-all, very good, and easy to prepare. It's a keeper!
06/24/2005
I tried it because the recipe just sounded really good. I read the reviews and they were mixed, but I thought, eh-I'll just try it. We did not like it at all. Way too sweet and just overall not a good flavor. Will continue looking for a good cheesey bread.
08/29/2011
YUM! made this one day when I had made a big pot of cream of celery soup. I did increase the milk to 1 cup and the cheese to 1 1/2 cups (or so) as suggested in the reviews. Such an easy recipe. It would be delicious with stew.
12/01/2010
It was good...but didn't taste very cheesy. Next time add more cheese....different cheese....more salt...some butter (or something, I'm brainstorming here?) It's a decent starter recipe though and served us well. Thanks!
06/26/2007
This recipe was so fast and simple yet delicious! My husband and I really enjoyed this bread. I increased the milk to 1 cup total as other reviewers suggested but kept the amount of cheese about the same. The first day yes, it was crumbly, but the leftovers did not crumble when cut. My tip is that to make this a great garlicy bread I added a bit of garlic powder which also made it smell great!
11/06/2007
Very tasty! I took everyone's advice and used 1 1/2 cups shredded cheese & 1 cup milk. It was a little sweet... next time I will cut back the sugar a little.
10/18/2006
Add 2 tbs og Classico pesto, really yummy!!!
06/09/2010
This bread was great! The only changes I made was a bit less sugar and a mixture of white cheeses instead of cheddar. We had it with ham n beans and it was delish! My daughter helped me make it...she's 4. It was her first bread.
05/03/2003
Easy and good
01/10/2006
I took the advice of some of the other reviewers and cut back the sugar to 1 1/2 Tablespoons, and I only had olive oil on hand. It didn't rise much, and I thought it was a lot like cornbread, which is fine, just really crumbly. It tasted okay, but not too much flavor. I think it would be really yummy with some garlic or herbs in it. It was very easy though, and fun to make with the kids!
07/07/2006
Very, very good! I did make a few modifications: per previous reviews, I increased the milk to 1 cup; I also decreased the sugar to 1 Tbsp. I used garlic salt instead of regular salt. And, I threw in a little parsley and added a little bit of shredded provolone cheese in addition to the cheddar. It was moist and cheesy and flavorful, and not crumbly. I will definitely make this again!
07/29/2005
My husband is very picky about all food and he love this bread!!!
09/19/2005
I agree it'a bit on the sweet side, but it is definitely not a disturbing taste. It is good, not super. I'll keep this recipe until something better crops up...
06/02/2010
very easy, quick, and tasty. Simply a must try!
03/05/2012
Im giving this one 2 stars because it is a very easy quick recipe, but the taste was just not good! The first time I made this exactly as the recipe calls, it was too sweet. The second time I made this I cut the sugar in 1/2 replaced the milk with buttermilk and added a little pepper and baked at 375F, looked nicer than the first but hardly any cheese flavor and both were a little crumbly. Wont try to make this again.
04/12/2011
Tastes great!! I usually add a pinch of black pepper, 2/4 cup raw organic sugar, and 1 1/2 cup of cheese. Gives it a bolder taste. This recipe also works great with whole wheat flour.
03/08/2010
I added about a tsp of garlic powder, increased to milk to 1 cup, decreased the sugar to 3 tbsp. and used 1 and 3/4 cup of cheese. The only cheese I had on hand was a "Mexican mix" of colby, cheddar, mozz, and monterrey jack. My 4 yo daughter said "This is better than Pizza Hut!" Very good garlic cheese bread. (I gave it 4 stars since I modified it)
02/24/2010
This had a weird taste to me, I'll try anther recipe next time.
03/05/2007
I made this cheese bread tonight and it was delicious! I also added 1 cup of milk and more cheese and some garlic powder. I left the sugar out. It was great and everyone loved it. I am definitly going to be making this again!
08/14/2010
Turned out so yummy! I added a bit more cheese than it called for and I added some garlic. I only baked it 30 minutes.
02/01/2008
Forgot to mention in my previous review -I used the suggestion to add only 1 tablespoon of sugar along with the teaspoon each of the spices. Will try dried basil next time instead of parsley. DO MAKE THESE!
05/10/2006
This bread was pretty good!
10/26/2003
I liked this recipe. Since the author said it was a bit crumbly I added a scant half cup of apple sauce and it was not too crumbly at all and added no taste. It was good and smelled great while it baked. Thanks!!
03/30/2005
this is just absaloutley delicious..i cant stop making them!!
01/24/2010
This is very good as long as you do the 1 cup butter and 1 1/2 cup cheese. I also added garlic powder and italian seasoning.
10/03/2010
This is an excellent quick bread. I changed it to an Italian cheese bread by substituting 1 1/2 cups of shredded Four Cheese Italian blend, 1 cup milk, 1 tsp dried minced garlic and 1 tsp Italian seasoning. The possibilities of this bread are endless. Next time I'm going to substitue the milk with beer.
04/28/2012
Not good at all. I followed other reviewers' recommendations and increased the milk to 1 cup, the cheese to 1 1/2 cups, and decreased the sugar to 1 tbsp. Strange texture, strange taste.
01/23/2013
Not sure what happened here, but my bread came out more like a huge cheese biscuit than bread. I followed the recipe to a "T" with the exception of less sugar, just a tablespoon. Oh, well, it was fun to try, and the first slices out of the oven slathered in butter were tasty. But as it cooled it just became one big brick. Thanks for sharing your recipe!
01/08/2008
very good..like others I added a little less sugar and about a cup of milk to make it less crumbly...I will be making again and will add more cheese next time!
11/13/2013
My son Jarod helped me make this he said it is very easy to make! We served it with Potato soup and my 3 guys ate everything!! They loved it!!
02/01/2009
I changed the recipe a tad, added 1 cup of milk and 1 1/2 cups of strong cheddar cheese. Bread was crumbly and lacked flavour. Will not be making again.
05/21/2006
This is an awesome recipe that is very versatile. I've made it without the sugar and added diced green peppers and ham and it is a hearty bread along side soup or added apples for a breakfast bread. Very simple and works every time. Thanks!!
05/11/2010
I loved this. I was searching for something quick and easy and this fit the bill perfectly. I used a dark 9 in round pan and took it out a few minutes before the timer went off (I did the toothpick test). Aside from adding garlic powder and onion powder, I didn't change/sub anything. My husband loved it, LOVED it. The consistency wasn't too flaky at all. I served it with a pasta sauce and used it to sop up all the sauce. This made a good dinner, great. Thank you!
04/04/2009
Very good and quick baking bread! I even used a gluten free flour mix and it turned out wonderful! Will make again!
10/17/2004
We like this a lot - but I can see why other reviewers would say it is a bit too sweet for their liking. It is a sweet tasting bread, but if you use a sharp cheddar it cuts through the sweetness very nicely. Also, as suggested by another reviewer, we increased the milk to one cup, but left the cheese at 1 cup; also added some garlic powder - was a great addition!
11/12/2007
This bread was pretty good except it was very sweet and not cheesy at all.
04/19/2010
This is a good, quick and easy recipe. It's inexpensive to make, too. I modified it a little, using ideas of my own and some I got from other reviewers: I eliminated the sugar and replaced the oil with apple sauce to make it low fat. I added 1/2 teaspoon of baking soda. I used extra sharp cheese (you can use more cheese to make it cheesier). I added 1/4 cup of jalapenos (you can use more or less jalapenos depending on how hot you want it).
07/01/2012
I don't taste any cheese and it is VERY sweet! I try to make recipes as close as possible to the original the first time but I followed some reviewers' advice and added 1 cup of milk and 1.5 cups of cheese bc I don't want crumbly bread. I used 1 cup of sharp cheddar (that's all I had left, I kept nibbling at it) and 0.5 cups of Italian cheese mix. I'd definitely recommend using at least 2 cups of SHARP cheddar! The consistency is exactly what I want from bread though, definitely add the extra milk and cheese. I'm going to give it another go with extra cheese, less sugar and see how it turns out. Not bad, but not what I was expecting either!
03/30/2014
Yummy and fluffy. I added a bit of garlic powder for flavor. Next time will follow some other tips so it doesn't crumble so easily. Otherwise, the flavor was nice.
03/16/2014
I liked it I added a splash more milk. As well as I used mozzarella cheese. I also had to lower the temp by 25• due to elevation.
01/01/2008
Delish. Followed the directions except for using a little less baking powder & a little more cheese. Really good & easy.
02/10/2008
TASTES GREAT!!! I TOOK THE ADVICE OF THE OTHER RATERS AND CHANGED THE MILK, CHEESE, AND SALT QUANTITIES!! CAME OUT WITH A CRISPY CRUST AND SOFT, MOIST CENTER!!!!
08/02/2008
This is a pretty good bread. I added extra cheese and milk like many others. I also added garlic, Italian seasoning and cayenne. The bread was good. I would make it again with my changes. It seemed a bit like biscuit dough to me. Next time I will make drop biscuits with it.
04/09/2009
This is the easiest, most tastiest, best bread recipe I have ever madee! Thanks!
01/26/2004
This was only okay -- definitely not fabulous. I took the suggestions I read and added more milk, more cheese and some garlic powder. My husband really didn't like it, and I thought it was pretty mediocre. It's very dense and definitely sort of crumbly. We only ate a little bit then I froze the rest thinking I'd like it again later. I just ended up throwing it away from the freezer. It's January now, and it's been there since this fall if that tells you anything. We won't be making this one again despite it's ease.
01/21/2009
Is it savory? Is it sweet? Waste of time and products
05/21/2010
A good basic recipe, but the sugar definitely needs to be reduced. Next time I'll try 1 TB.
09/08/2013
Too sweet and dense.
12/19/2010
Followed recipe exactly as written. It was easy and quick, but too sweet. I will not make it again.
02/08/2010
I made this JUST as the recipe stated to do so, but added 1/4 cup of diced jalapenos. This was PERFECT for the guys at the superbowl party :D
